چکیده

In this paper, we study the parameterized complexity of the problems of partitioning the vertex set of a graph into two parts VA and VB such that VA induces a graph with degree at most a (resp., an a-regular graph) and VB induces a graph with degree at most b (resp., a b-regular graph). These two problems are called Upper-Degree-Bounded Bipartition and Regular Bipartition respectively. First, we prove that the two problems are NP-complete with any nonnegative integers a and b except a = b = 0. Second, we show the fixed-parameter tractability of constrained versions of these two problems with parameter k = |VA| being the size of one part of the bipartition by deriving some problem kernels for them.

Complexity and approximation ratio of semitotal domination in graphs

A set $S subseteq V(G)$ is a semitotal dominating set of a graph $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ andevery vertex in $S$ is within distance 2 of another vertex of $S$. Thesemitotal domination number $gamma_{t2}(G)$ is the minimumcardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$.We show that the semitotal domination problem isAPX-complete for bounded-degree graphs, and the semitotal dominatio...

k-forested choosability of graphs with bounded maximum average degree

A proper vertex coloring of a simple graph is $k$-forested if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest with maximum degree less than $k$. A graph is $k$-forested $q$-choosable if for a given list of $q$ colors associated with each vertex $v$, there exists a $k$-forested coloring of $G$ such that each vertex receives a color from its own list. In this paper, we prov...

Kernelization Using Structural Parameters on Sparse Graph Classes

Meta-theorems for polynomial (linear) kernels have been the subject of intensive research in parameterized complexity. Heretofore, there were meta-theorems for linear kernels on graphs of bounded genus, H-minor-free graphs, and H-topological-minor-free graphs. To the best of our knowledge, there are no known meta-theorems for kernels for any of the larger sparse graph classes: graphs of bounded...

Classifying the Clique-Width of H-Free Bipartite Graphs

Let G be a bipartite graph, and let H be a bipartite graph with a fixed bipartition (BH ,WH). We consider three different, natural ways of forbidding H as an induced subgraph in G. First, G is H-free if it does not contain H as an induced subgraph. Second, G is strongly H-free if G is H-free or else has no bipartition (BG,WG) with BH ⊆ BG and WH ⊆ WG. Third, G is weakly H-free if G is H-free or...

Balanced vertex-orderings of graphs

In this paper we consider the problem of determining a balanced ordering of the vertices of a graph; that is, the neighbors of each vertex v are as evenly distributed to the left and right of v as possible. This problem, which has applications in graph drawing for example, is shown to be NP-hard, and remains NP-hard for bipartite simple graphs with maximum degree six. We then describe and analy...
